Shingles Vaccine: Who Needs it and When to Get it

The Shingrix vaccine, FDA-approved in the USA, is designed to prevent Shingles (herpes zoster) and its most common complication, postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), a painful condition caused by nerve damage from the shingles virus.
Shingles Vaccine: Who Needs it and When to Get It
Shingrix contains a non-live, recombinant antigen combined with an adjuvant to boost the immune response. It is highly effective, offering over 90% protection against shingles and PHN, with immunity remaining strong for several years after vaccination.
Who Should Get the Shingles Vaccine?
Shingrix is recommended for adults aged 50 and older, regardless of whether they’ve had shingles in the past or received the older shingles vaccine, Zostavax.
It is also advised for adults aged 19 and older who have weakened immune systems due to conditions or treatments, as they are at higher risk for shingles and its complications. The vaccine is administered in two doses, spaced two to six months apart.
Shingrix Side Effects
The most common side effects of Shingrix are mild to moderate and typically resolve within a few days. These include pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, chills, fever, and gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea. While these side effects can be uncomfortable, they indicate the immune system is responding to the vaccine. Serious reactions are rare, but individuals with a history of severe allergic reactions to any vaccine component should avoid Shingrix.
